In order to get your license in many states as in Texas, as in some other states, you must get an insurance policy with sr22 certification and pay a reinstatement fee. The sr22 is a special insurance policy whose purpose is to ensure that the motorist has coverage at all times, after the motorist has had their license suspended, as a result of a violations, such as a conviction for DWI or drunk driving.

Your insurance policy will produce a certificate of proof of your financial responsibility. That certificate needs to be filed with the Department of Public Safety (DPS). If you are a repeat offender, they might also require you to go to a DWI education program. When you finish this program, a certificate of completion must be filed with the DPS. All of this must be done before your driver’s license can be reinstated. In some cases in order to reinstate your license you must get a copy of your driving record. In various states, you will need to go to a local Secretary of State office to request the proper forms. By giving your zip code to the operator, you can find the nearest Secretary of State Office location. At your local Secretary of State office you can obtain a Driving Record Abstract request form, also known as the DSD DC-164 form.

The sr22 is mandatory, and must be kept current, for two or three years after the conviction or judgment. If the insurance coverage lapses, usually due to non-payment, the insurance company will notify the state. At that point, the Department of Licensing will suspend your license, and you will have to go through the whole process again.

Many insurance companies offer policies with the sr22 Texas requirements. It is a good idea to check with a few insurance companies to find a good price on a policy that fits your needs.
